Paper screw caps from Värmland replace plastic – and soon for giants such as Coca Cola

Blue Ocean Closure's paper fibre-based corks have quickly progressed from being a vision, to beginning to replace plastic screw caps on the market. Now the company from Värmland is broadening its business to produce simpler products that can be cost-competitive especially at scale and in selected applications. They are backed by several major investors and their customers include some well-known international brands.

They are challenging plastic in food packaging

The restaurant and food industry is finding it difficult to completely eliminate plastic from its single-use items, and from packaging. Now, after years of collaboration, the partners in a BioInnovation project have developed a fully bio-based alternative that can phase out the plastic that has previously been very difficult to replace. The bio-based solution is easy to recycle and is neither more expensive nor more resource-intensive to produce.

Research results on resource-efficient processes

The Industrial Graduate school Resource-smart Processes is an initiative to further develop today’s processes in the forest-, textile- and chemical industries through better use of bio-based raw materials.

BioInnovation is a strategic innovation program initiated by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, IKEM (the Innovation and Chemical Industries in Sweden) and TEKO (Swedish Textile and Clothing Industries Association). The program is funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas as well as by the participating stakeholders from business, academia, institutes and public sector. Our mission is to create the best conditions for the development of the Swedish biobased sector, and to create sustainable solutions for a global market.
